The Little Things in Baseball Make a Huge Difference: Coach Nicks take on Game 3 and 4 of the NLDS
Love watching this game! Crazy how the smallest things can make a huge difference in the game. Im completely locked in on the playoffs primarily the Padres games. The past two nights I have seen a few things that I felt I needed to share. Not every fan noticed them but they made a huge impact in the game.
In game 3 of the NLDS there were 3 plays that led to the Padres big inning. These plays were simple but extremely high level and in my opinion coaches, including myself need to point out.
Play 1:
Manny Machado's taking away the throwing lane on the ground ball hit to Freddy Freeman. Manny understood that the throw was coming from inside of the baseline. The trick to this is to run towards the glove of the defender. In plays like this we can't see what's going on behind us. You watch where the defender is set up, watch his eyes and glove positioning and run towards it. This play forced a tough throw and the ball hit Manny in the back and ended up in left field and gave the Padres a runner in scoring position.
Play 2:
Jackson Merrill getting an aggressive Secondary and beating the short stop to second base. When we are in a situation where you are on first base and there is runner on second base, you want to be extra aggressive on your secondary with the goal of beating out the force out at second base. Because of this extra aggressive secondary lead Merrill was able to be safe at second, get into scoring position, keep the inning going and hopefully set up for the big inning!
Play 3:
Xander Bogaerts touching the very front of first base to make himself safe. Again this is another play that easily went un noticed. Bogaerts was the player that hit the ground ball to the short stop that Merrill beat out at Second Base. Xander hit what looked like a easy 6-4-3 double play ball. He busted his butt down first baseline and touched the very front of first base to barely beat the throw by half of a step.
If he did what most amateur baseball players do, step on top of the base, he is out!
Final Breakdown:
By these high IQ, and hustling plays the Padres were able eventually get the big hit which led to a big inning. If any of the 3 plays don't happen the Padres may not have scored at all. Turns out the game ended up being a 6-5 Victory. Without these plays that big inning doesn't happen and the Padres wouldn't have won!
The purpose of these blogs are to help young players recognize and learn about aspects of the game that can make them better players with a high baseball IQ. Add these small things to your game and have a huge impact on helping your team succeed!
