Finding Your Edge: The Focus and Will to Win
These are the two key topics I’m covering in this blog, and for us, they will work together.
In our last blog, we talked a lot about Finding Our Edge. Now, we’re shifting to The Will to Win—the driving force that will help us build and sustain our edge as a team and organization.
We’ve all experienced or watched games where our team just couldn’t get things going or seemed flat. On the flip side, we’ve also seen our team firing on all cylinders.
What makes this happen? What causes us to be locked in and focused at times and flat and disengaged at others?
As with most things we discuss, there isn’t a single answer. But today, we’re going to focus on The Will to Win to bring it all together.
I believe the Will to Win is what pushes us to train hard, inspires us to connect and communicate as a team, motivates us to rally for the big hit or clutch pitch, and makes us hungry and eager to contribute. It’s what drives us even when moments are scary and uncomfortable.
So, how do we get comfortable in uncomfortable situations? A team that shares the Will to Win motivates each other. It helps us focus. The desire to contribute to your team’s success creates clarity and confidence, even in tough moments.
We know we’re not alone. We have a team of guys who are connected, rooting for us to succeed, and ready to catch us when we fall. We know that to win, we need to be together.
We have a 1-hour warm-up and a 2-hour game. For the 3 hours we are there to play, everything we do, every conversation we have, and everything we think about is focused on winning the ball game.
If this is your focus...
When it’s time to stretch, you are stretching with a purpose. This means you are warming up all the necessary muscles you know you will need to compete at your highest level. When you are playing catch, you throw the ball accurately. You move your feet when making your throw to practice the proper footwork and warm up your accurate throws because you know you will need to make a good throw when it counts.
When it’s game time, you are locked in! You are watching each pitch to see if the pitcher is creating a pattern with his pitches. You are paying attention to the pitcher’s tempos and how fast he is releasing to the plate to determine if you’ll be able to swipe a bag later.
When we score, we are celebrating and excited for our team! We are fully invested in our goal and our team’s goal and WILL TO WIN!
This mindset is our edge. Take this into all you do, and you will find success! This is a winner’s attitude, and this is the attitude we will embrace!
